Embratel, the incumbent long-distance carrier, has announced the commercial launch of local service in 17 cities by February 1 and another eight by March 1. Here?s the first list of cities, in some of which it?s already operating trials with selected corporate customers: Aracaju, Bauru, Belém, Brasília, Contagem, Curitiba, João Pessoa, Maceió, Manaus, Natal, Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, Santo André, São Luis, São Paulo, Teresina, Vitória. The second batch is Boa Vista, Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Florianópolis, Goiânia, Palmas, Porto Velho, Rio Branco. Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Recife and Salvador have had local service from Embratel for some time.
