Communications Minister Miro Teixeira asks Anatel to give FUST priority

Communications Minister Miro Teixeira has asked Anatel to give top priority to implementation of investment projects using the FUST fund for universalization of telecommunications. The meeting with Anatel?s board was held on Thursday, January 9. Deputy Sérgio Miranda (PC do B, Minas Gerais) and Fernando Peregrino, Rio de Janeiro state secretary for science and technology, also took part. Anatel undertook to submit a report to the ministry in two weeks? time outlining the FUST projects already completed or in progress and suggestions on further projects for the near term. According to Luiz Guilherme Schymura, director-general of Anatel, Miro Teixeira expressed particular interest in ensuring that all public schools are connected to the Internet. He instructed Anatel to oversee the use of FUST funds so that they?re spent only on installation of access infrastructure. Equipment purchasing will probably be left up to state governments. It isn?t clear whether the 2002 surplus will be used or only the contributions to be paid in by telcos in 2003. For his part, Miro Teixeira undertook to seek funding from other sources. No reference was made to a proposal to amend the legislation on FUST so that other companies apart from telcos can participate in projects.
