Embratel won licenses for point-multipoint transmission at 3.5 GHz in all three areas of the General Licensing Plan (Portuguese-language acronym PGO) at an auction held by Anatel on Tuesday, February 11. It was the only bidder except for the first right (priority in choosing frequencies) in Region 3 (São Paulo State), where it bid against DirectNet, which won the second right to operate in the same region. Embratel bid 5,338,326 Brazilian Reals, or 1% more than the minimum price, for Region 1 (16 states in the Southeast, North and Northeast); 2,038,225 BRL, a premium of 0,4%, for Region II (nine states in the South, Center-West and North); and 2,730,001 BRL for Region 3, a premium of 7,2%. DirectNet bid 2,6m BRL for Region 3. Anatel allows a 10% downpayment plus six annual installments with up to two years grace. Bids for frequencies in the 3,5 GHz band by numbering area were also opened on February 11.
