As of March 1 Telefonica is offering long-distance and international calls in all regions of Brazil. Telemar launched the same services nationwide on February 27. Price lists were published last week in major newspapers. According to Telefonica Group President Fernando Xavier, no date has been set for local service to start in Regions I (Telemar) and II (Brasil Telecom). Anatel has given Telefonica until May 6 to begin providing local service outside its own region.
Corporate market
Telefonica is basically targeting the corporate market in launching long-distance and international services nationwide, says Fernando Xavier. In this case it?s bound not by the law on holders of ?concessions?, i.e. incumbents, but ?authorizations? and therefore doesn?t have to meet regulatory targets.
