Anatel expected to turn down Vésper?s request for 1900 MHz

A source close to the Government guarantees that Vésper?s lobbying for permission to use 1900 MHz for PCS wireless service is most unlikely to succeed. Although Communications Minister Miro Teixeira recently expressed support for Vésper, the source sees a change in the rules as too risky, especially under these circumstances. Thus the decision will be left to Anatel, which will take only technical considerations into account.
The Government wants to avoid suspicion of influence trafficking in favor of this or that technology, above all because it?s believed that Telefonica would benefit from a change in the rules by being able to use Vésper?s network to extend coverage to areas such as the Northeast and Minas Gerais. Future conflict can be avoided only if the rules stay as they are, the source says.
