The Brazilian association of infrastructure-owning companies and private telecommunications systems (Aptel) has decided not to present its plan for the use of powerline communications technology (PLC) as an alternative for universalizing telephone and Internet access until after the next Administration takes office in January. ?We will present our plan in the first quarter of 2003 to officials of the new government,? said Aptel Chairman Pedro Jatobá. Aptel has set up a working group to prepare a plan on PLC implementation and regulation in Brazil. Use of electric power lines to transmit voice and data can speed up industry growth and universal access, he said, since energy networks already cover much more of the country than telecoms networks. ?In addition, PLC could be interesting for ISPs and CLECs,? he added.
