Telefonica and Telemar issued press releases on Wednesday, May 14, stating that they have no outstanding debts to the social security system and have been duly certified to that effect by INSS, the national social security institute. The statements were a response to the announcement of a list of the largest debtors including both ILECs. They acknowledged that they and the INSS are parties to a number of lawsuits and that they?re being investigated in INSS administrative proceedings owing to differing interpretations of the legislation on social security contributions. They said they cannot be deemed in arrears, are paying contributions in accordance with the law, and insist on exercising their legitimate right of self-defense.
