Communications Minister Miro Teixeira has admitted to receiving a report on investigations by the Federal Public Prosecutor?s Office (MPF) into alleged irregularities in the privatization of Telebras.
Mr Teixeira says he?s legally prevented from disclosing details of the report, but acknowledges that the alleged irregularities involve private-sector firms that took part in the privatization process.
Luiz Carlos Mendonça de Barros, who was communications minister at the time (1998), also admits to having knowledge of such allegations and confirms the involvement of private enterprise.
Banestado
The Banestado inquiry currently under way in Congress to investigate allegations of illegal transfers of funds abroad through the Paraná State bank via CC-5 accounts (for non-residents), is considering the hypothesis that part of the money returned to Brazil via the investment funds that participated in the privatization process. Federal Prosecutor Luiz Francisco de Souza recently told the inquiry that his office and the Federal Police are investigating the funds.
