Portugal Telecom, Telefonica relinquish additional frequencies

Jarbas Valente, Anatel?s head of private services, told TELETIME News that Portugal Telecom and Telefonica have formally relinquished their application for PCS frequencies in the 1800 MHz band, filed last year. They?re now operating in wireless as a joint venture (Brasilcel), with CDMA carriers in several states. The joint venture recently signed an agreement with Splice to acquire Tele Centro Oeste Celular (TCO). TCO, which operates TDMA, has also applied for extension frequencies. However, it will soon begin overlaying CDMA, according to Francisco Padinha, CEO of the joint venture, so presumably TCO will also withdraw its application for the frequencies at 1800 MHz.
