BrT: purchase of Globenet cable not yet ruled out

Although Carla Cico, CEO of Brasil Telecom (BrT), mentioned only MetroRED and Intelig when asked about possible acquisitions during an international teleconference on Monday, August 12, sources close to negotiations with Globenet (ex-360americas) say a deal could still be reached on the sale to BrT of its submarine cable. Last week?s board meetings at Solpart, the holding company, and Brasil Telecom S.A. failed to approve bids for Intelig and Globenet only because some directors requested more time to analyze possible regulatory obstacles and economic feasibility. Both boards are likely to return to the topic before long. Globenet?s submarine ring around the Americas would give BrT?s planned national network an international outlet. Although the LEC hasn?t invested in early target fulfillment it has been busy building points of presence around Brazil since it acquired 19.9% in Vant, a special data service licensee that serves the corporate segment in several states. If BrT acquires MetroRED, it will strengthen its position with fiber-optic metropolitan area networks in all three of Brazil?s largest cities, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte.
