Net/Vicom demonstrates IP telephony

Net Serviços and Vicom, its corporate service unit, are demonstrating their IP telephony solution at Telexpo, the telecommunications industry trade show that takes place all this week in São Paulo. The solution has been demonstrated before but this is the first time it?s had a gateway for access to the public network. This means calls can leave Net?s broadband Internet access network (Vírtua) and reach any part of the public telecommunications network.
The demo uses technology from Cisco, Motorola and Trópico. The system is simple, comprising a phone connected to a cable modem, which converts the voice signal into IP packets. The packets are carried by Vírtua?s network in São Paulo to the gateway, located in Campinas, a 60-minute drive from São Paulo. Packets are then routed to the public network.
Net has been trying to close a deal with Embratel for use of this system but the negotiations have made slow progress in recent months. The cable operator also hopes the Government will see its potential for promoting competition in the voice segment, which badly needs a boost according to Communications Minister Miro Teixeira.
