Brasil Telecom to meet targets soon, launch PCS in second half

Brasil Telecom has decided to meet its regulatory universal access and quality of service targets as an ILEC ahead of the December 2003 deadline and begin commercial delivery of PCS wireless service in the second half. The decision was announced Wednesday, January 22, during a meeting between BrT CEO Carla Cico and Luiz Guilherme Schymura, director-general of Anatel. The targets will be met by the end of February, Ms Cico said. BrT advised Anatel formally because the law requires filing and publication of information on target fulfillment 30 days in advance.
According to a news release issued by BrT, the targets will be achieved without difficulties. ?The process relating to early target fulfillment is being completed without significant difficulties since network expansion to meet demand has occurred naturally in step with market requirements,? it said. ?The amount invested has been less than the industry average two years ago because equipment costs are lower.?
At the end of 2002, BrT acquired PCS licenses for the states it covers as an ILEC (Acre, Rondônia, Tocantins, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, and the Federal District) for a total fee of almost 191.5 million Brazilian Reals. It plans to partner with Telemig Celular and Amazônia Celular.
