Communications Ministry prepares to restructure

The Communications Ministry (Minicom) has sent the Planning Ministry an organizational restructuring proposal, according to sources close to Minicom. PAY-TV News has learned that the main changes proposed entail the creation of a Department of Telecommunications Services with two sub-divisions; transformation of the Broadcasting Department into a Mass Media Department; and transformation of the Postal Services Department into a unit subordinated directly to the Executive Secretariat. Staffing levels won?t be increased since the Planning Ministry has already determined that all government agencies must cut payroll by 30%. The new Mass Media Department would be responsible among other things for broadcasting, including auctions of TV and radio licenses.
Communications Minister Miro Teixeira?s press office said the restructuring is under discussion with the Office of the Presidential Chief of Staff. Particular attention is being paid to the creation of a Telecommunications Department, a suggestion first brought up by the transition team and not yet implemented.
