Telecom Americas seen as certain to buy BCP

The consensus among equity analysts is that Telecom Americas, recently renamed Claro, is on the verge of closing a deal with BCP?s creditors. A report by Jeffrey Noble, an analyst with BBVA Research who monitors America Movil (the controlling shareholder in Telecom Americas), says this week that despite press coverage of Telemar?s interest in BCP ?we believe America Movil remains the more likely buyer, given its superior capacity to absorb BCP?s debt?. Mexican analysts were jaundiced about the idea but have now begun seeing it as a potentially attractive proposition.
Analysts and investors in Mexico City and New York responded favorably to an interview with Carlos Henrique Moreira, president of Telecom Americas, announcing that the telco plans to sign up 500,000 subscribers in metropolitan São Paulo by the end of the year.
