Government moving ahead with plan to tighten control of regulators

The Government has completed a first draft of a plan to modify the powers of the various regulatory agencies in Brazil, according to Communications Minister Miro Teixeira. He was speaking at a debate on ?Regulation & Public Services? held Tuesday, August 19, at the University of São Paulo Law School.
The basis for the document derived from a working group chaired by Presidential Chief of Staff José Dirceu. Mr Teixeira declined to say what kind of changes will be proposed in the specific case of Anatel, but suggested they would involve a management contract. The Government hasn?t defined a time frame for completion of the plan, he said. Mr Dirceu?s working group included representatives of other ministries whose remits involve regulated industries.
