Iberians plan to buy 6 million CDMA handsets in 2003

The Portugal Telecom/Telefonica joint venture plans to acquire 6 million CDMA handsets this year, according to an executive with one of the leading vendors to the Brazilian market. The number is based on an optimistic forecast that the subscriber base will renew about 25% of existing handsets while expanding 20%. It also plans to offer incentives for Telefonica?s TDMA customers in Rio Grande do Sul and subscribers to the newly acquired TCO/NBT to migrate to CDMA as soon as overlay begins there. As well as TCO, the joint venture operates Telefonica Celular, Telesp Celular, and Global Telecom.
