No plan to change index for fixed-line telephone rates, says José Leite

Anatel board member José Leite says there are no plans to change the method of adjusting user rates for fixed-line telephone service. The law currently specifies annual adjustment based on the IGP-DI, a general price index calculated by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV). It?s possible to change the index but Anatel doesn?t intend to do so. ?Ideally we should be using an index that rises less than the others, which was the case with the IGP-DI when the incumbents got their licenses four years ago,? he says. ?However, it?s impossible to foresee what will happen over the next 20 years. For that reason alone any decision on changing the rate-setting method would be complicated.?
