Anatel confirms close monitoring of Embratel

In an official notice released Monday, July 22, Anatel said it so far sees no grounds for intervening in Embratel, a subsidiary of WorldCom, which has just filed for Chapter 11 protection from creditors. Anatel also stressed that ever since WorldCom?s problems became public it has been closely monitoring the operating performance of Embratel and the financial situation of its U.S.-based parent. The note went on to say that Anatel maintains strict surveillance of the quality and continuity of the services provided by Embratel, as well as the financial situation of the assets leased to it under license by the Government. Lastly, Anatel noted that Embratel was removed from WorldCom?s consolidated balance sheet some time ago and that CVM, Brazil?s securities and exchange watchdog, found no evidence of irregularity in a recent audit.
