TIM halts GSM network buildout in several regions

TIM Brazil, which early in August announced its readiness to slow the pace of PCS network buildout, has completely halted work in several parts of its coverage area. Only contracts signed before the cutback was announced are still in progress. TIM is controlled by Telecom Italia, which as a major shareholder in Brasil Telecom is prevented by cross-ownership restrictions from operating its GSM network until the fixed-line incumbent fulfils regulatory targets. Nevertheless TIM?s network is ready to go, covering major cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. It remains only to improve base station density in upstate areas. The suppliers are Nokia, Siemens and Ericsson.
