Communications Minister supports division of telecoms service networks

Communications Minister Juarez Quadros has expressed support for a proposal advocated by Federal Deputy Alberto Goldman (PSDB, São Paulo) to divide up the provision of telecommunications services. In an exclusive interview with TELETIME magazine, Dep. Goldman said telecoms networks should belong to more than one company and shouldn?t be allowed to deliver service directly. Alluding to the electricity industry, where this separation already exists, he said it would boost competition in telecoms and avert the difficulties with interconnection that currently plague the sector. Juarez Quadros says it?s a good idea because a very large proportion of Brazil?s infrastructure is idle. ?Only 20% of all the fiber-optic cable capacity is in use,? he notes. In Japan and Canada, local governments administer the use of ducts and cables, he says, which is a solution to the problem of infrastructure sharing.
