Lula criticizes regulators

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticized the federal regulators at a lunch with leaders of the parties in the ruling coalition in Brasília on Wednesday, February 19. According to Deputy Roberto Jefferson, leader of the PTB in the lower house, the president said he intends to review the powers of the agencies in charge of regulating telecommunications, electricity, oil etc., and could intervene to limit price increases. Lula complained of ?being the last to know? about such increases when they?re announced in the media, Dep. Jefferson reported. Lula said the regulatory agencies are ?above the law?, constituting a ?parallel power?: for example, Congress can?t oblige the heads of these agencies to testify. Communications Minister Miro Teixeira has no plans to comment on Lula?s views, the ministry?s press office said.
