Embratel, granted local license, negotiates with Net

Having obtained a license to offer local telephone service throughout Brazil from Anatel on Thursday, August 8, Embratel will initially focus on the corporate segment in Brasília, Curitiba, Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Salvador, and Recife. Number portability is an obstacle, says Purificación Carpinteyro, vice president for local service, adding that Embratel aims to offer ADSL and local telephone service to residential customers once unbundling agreements have been worked out with the LECs. Talks are in progress with Net Serviços (ex-Globo Cabo) to pursue ways of using the pay-TV MSO?s network, Ms Carpinteyro says.
