Telefonica prepares to launch next-generation services

Telefonica plans to launch IP services such as virtual private networking (VPN) and VoIP over MPLS by the end of March, according to a source close to the ILEC. The services will be offered both inside and outside its concession area (São Paulo State), mainly to small, medium and large business clients but also to new customers, via both Telefonica Empresas and the local carrier. Telefonica is currently holding trials with customers already serviced by its frame relay network. The company?s press office declined to confirm this information officially.
Telefonica has invited equipment vendors to submit proposals for two class 4 switches and the related transmission network to carry VoIP long-distance traffic outside its concession area. According to an executive with one of the invited vendors, Telefonica aims to prioritize investment in next-generation infrastructure so as to expand its market share nationwide. The cost of these facilities will reach 20 million Brazilian Reals, the source reckons.
