TIM brakes expansion of GSM network in Brazil

Faced by the prospect that Anatel?s ban on startup may remain in place for some time yet, TIM has decided to slow down installation of its nationwide GSM network and of the commercial infrastructure needed by the new mobile carriers it controls to operate PCS services regionally. A press release announced the decision but didn?t say how many towers have been installed or detail the extent to which expansion work will be cut back. The release quotes Marco De Benedetti, group CEO of Telecom Italia Mobile, stressing Brazil?s strategic importance to its plans for a pan-American GSM network. TIM Brazil?s suppliers are Nokia, Siemens and Ericsson.
