Oi has announced that it added 300,000 new subscribers in November and passed the one-million mark after five months of operation. The company has once again beaten its own expectations: it wasn?t aiming to have 1m subscribers until the end of the year. Prepaid plans account for 78% of the subscriber base. Seven out of every ten customers switched from other wireless operators. The company expects to sell 100,000 units of its ?Oi Xuxa? handset in the holiday season (Xuxa is a popular TV show host). This product, together with ?Oi MTV?, is expected to account for 10% of the base by the end of the year.
World record
A survey by DiamondCluster shows Oi?s debut to have been the strongest GSM launch in the world to date. The previous record was held by Taiwan Cellular, which signed up 638,000 customers in six months. Oi currently covers 400 cities in 14 states of Region 1. Its network has 2,400 antennas.
