According to a note released by the Central Bank, the average impact of the fixed-line telephone tariff increase authorized by Anatel on the relevant price group in the IPCA for July will be 18.9%, raising the index for the month by 0.56 of a percentage point (pp). The IPCA is the national consumer price index calculated by IBGE and used for inflation targeting by the monetary authorities.
The tariff basket calculated by the Central Bank includes only certain items of the residential tariff (monthly subscription charge and pulses) and long-distance rates. Thus its projection of the inflationary impact of the tariff review excludes the 41.7% hike in other rates, especially for business users.
Another point made in the press release is that the impact on the July IPCA would be 0.66 pp if the increase had been based on the full IGP-DI index.
