Communications Ministry prepared to give ground on this year?s tariff hike

Pedro Jaime, head of the Communications Ministry?s new department of telecommunications, said Monday, April 28, that a first meeting has been held between his team and representatives of local exchange carriers to negotiate a different formula for the annual tariff increase than the one stipulated in their licenses (indexation to the IGP-DI). At the meeting the ministry stressed its interest in negotiating a lower tariff hike in order to avoid fueling inflation, he reported. Now it?s up to the LECs to say whether they agree to open negotiations and, if so, to present a proposal. If none of the telcos will negotiate, Pedro Jaime said, the Government won?t take any steps that could be construed as a breach of contract. In other words, the LECs will be allowed to pass along annual inflation according to the IGP-DI to user rates if they deem it appropriate to do so. However, he said he fully expected the LECs to sit down and negotiate a better solution for consumers
