TIM may be operating within a fortnight

Jarbas Valente, Anatel?s head of private services, says he hasn?t been officially advised of the change of ownership at Brasil Telecom yet but once that happens TIM should be authorized to start delivering commercial PCS service within two weeks, provided documentation of the new shareholder agreement is in order. The procedure is for TIM to notify Mr Valente?s department that it has complied with the rules for such authorization by leaving the block of controlling shareholders in BrT. The fixed-line incumbent in turn must advise Anatel?s public service department of Telecom Italia?s move, furnishing sufficient proof of the ownership change. The Italians will retain a significant stake in Solpart, the holding company for BrT, but less than the 20% of voting stock established by law as a threshold for cross-ownership restrictions to apply. Both departments of Anatel will process the documentation simultaneously and submit the case to the board of directors, which alone is responsible for authorizing TIM?s startup. If it does, the private service department will give the green light for TIM to use the PCS frequencies it has already acquired.
