Intelig backs ministry against criticism of ILECs

In a letter delivered to the Communications Ministry on Wednesday, May 21, Intelig has expressed opposition to the incumbents? arguments that the proposed presidential decree setting out the Government?s new telecommunications policy is illegal and endangers the telcos? financial health. Intelig is the competitive long-distance carrier.
As the letter recalls, a clause in the incumbents? license allows the Government to include new terms of reference at renewal. Intelig expresses total support for the new terms proposed and advocates inclusion of clear rules allowing the implementation of unbundling and service resale this year. The text as it stands could be misconstrued as applying only to new licenses, in Intelig?s view.
The incumbents licenses won?t be renewed until 2006 but they have to say whether they?re interested by the end of next month.
