All incumbents agree to terms of new 20-year licenses, beginning in 2006

As expected all the incumbent fixed-line carriers have now officially notified Anatel that they?re willing to renew their licenses. Embratel and Sercomtel had already done so earlier. On Monday, June 30, the final deadline, it was the turn of Telefonica (Telesp fixa), Telemar, Brasil Telecom and CTBC, according to information provided by Anatel.
The current licenses expire on December 31, 2005. The new licenses will last 20 years. The telcos don?t actually have to sign the new licenses until 2005.
Anatel published the terms of the new licenses in the Federal Register (Diário Oficial da União) on June 20, together with the General Quality Target Plan. The General Universalization Target Plan was published on Saturday, June 28.
