TIM?s wireless operations using GSM technology in Brazil will have 800,000 subscribers at the end of June, according to Luís Roberto Antonik, vice president and director of regulatory and international affairs. Mr Antonik was addressing 3GSM Brazil 2003 in Rio de Janeiro.
The subscriber base is set to reach 1.7 million by the end of 2003, he added.
TIM had 650,000 GSM subscribers at the end of May and 5.1m TDMA subscribers in March. The total customer base will reach 6m by the end of the first half, Mr Antonik said.
TIM currently has 5,000 base stations in Brazil (3,500 in TDMA and 1,500 in GSM). A further 2,000 will be built nationwide by the end of the year.
Mr Antonik said completion of the GSM overlay on TIM?s and Telecom Americas? TDMA networks will translate into 13m potential adds from new users and competitors? subscribers.
