Anatel to formalize 2003 tariff reset

Negotiations on this year?s fixed-line telephone tariff reset have been formally transferred from the Communications Ministry to Anatel.
The Government?s team of negotiators has concluded talks with representatives of the incumbent local telephone companies. The team comprised Pedro Jaime, head of telecoms at the Communications Ministry; Daniel Goldberg, secretary of economic law at the Justice Ministry; and Marcos Lisboa, secretary of economic policy at the Finance Ministry.
According to Marcos Lisboa, the talks addressed issues involving ?the ministerial sphere?. In a press conference at the Communications Ministry he said the first part of the negotiations was ?doubly successful? first because the telcos agreed to stagger this year?s increase and second because the Government ?demonstrated maturity in regard to the regulatory framework?.

When asked about the institutional issues addressed in the talks, the Government?s team declined to cite examples and promised to send Anatel a report for use in the second part of the negotiations.
