Telecom Americas reports 5.3 million subscribers

Telecom Americas had 5.3 million subscribers in Brazil, not counting BSE, at the end of the first quarter for an annualized increase of 14.6%. According to a report issued Wednesday, April 23, by America Moviles, the Mexican-based parent company, Telecom Americas? four cellular carriers (Americel, Telet, Tess, and ATL) posted service revenues of 488 million Brazilian Reals in the period, up 16% year over year, and handsets sales of 61m BRL, up 4%. The churn rate rose from 1.5% to 2% between the first quarter of 2002 and 2003.
America Moviles also has operations in Guatemala, Ecuador, the U.S., and Argentina. At the end of the quarter its aggregate subscriber base totaled 33.2m, for an increase of 1.6m. In early March it agreed to acquire the Brazilian carrier BSE.
