Only ATL can be controlled by Telecom Americas, says Anatel

Anatel published Thursday, August 8, a document setting out the authorized ownership structure for Telecom Americas to hold equity simultaneously in Telet, Americel, Tess, and ATL. In practice the regulator would allow control only of ATL. Telecom Americas would have to hold less than 20% in the other three mobile carriers. The conflict arises because no company or group can control more than two operators in the most profitable areas, i.e. Regions 1 through 6 (São Paulo city and state, Rio de Janeiro/Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina/Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul). The problem will disappear if the company migrates to PCS, Anatel noted.
