Anatel reconvenes auction of leftovers with new prices

Jarbas Valente, Anatel?s head of private services, announced Tuesday, July 30, that the agency will republish the bidding notice for D and E bands with updated minimum prices. It will cover the same ten areas as for existing cellular services and will be priced on the basis of the reference prices for additional frequencies issued the same day, with discounts proportional to the population of each region. Before publication in the Federal Register, however, Anatel?s board must first approve the bidding notice. That can?t happen until the board returns from its mid-year recess on August 4. Jarbas Valente said he expects the notice to be published in August so the auction can be held by the end of September. Anatel has opted for an auction because it believes there will be more than one bidder in some areas, such as São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná and Santa Catarina.
